The four Provinces of Liguria : Genova : Imperia : La Spezia : Savona
One of Italy's smallest regions, Liguria stretches west in a narrow ribbon along the coast from France and is better known as the Italian Riviera. Mountains separate Liguria from Piedmont to the north, Emilia Romagna to the east and Tuscany to the south. Leguria’s capital, Genoa, divides the coastline into two. The Riviera di Ponente, lies between the city and the French border and has long sandy beaches; the stretch that extending towards Tuscany is called Riviera di Levante.
Local Cuisine
The food shares elements with its northern neighbours such as Lombardy and Piedmont, but owes as much to the southern Mediterranean, even North Africa. The basis of all recipes is Ligurian olive oil, and this is used in the production of the world famous Pesto sauce which originates from here. There is a wide variety of ravioli; the most original are pansotti, larger ravioli filled with vegetables and herbs, delicious with walnut sauce. Meat dishes of the area include tomaselle, veal roulades filled with meat, egg and herbs, and cima, veal stomach stuffed with a mixture of meat, vegetables and cheese. Fish There is a wide range of recipes: mixed fried fish, fish salad, triglie (mullet) alla genovese and sweetsour stockfish. Muscles, either alla marinara or stuffed and anchovies. Wine: Cinque Terre DOC, and the rare Sciacchetrà.
Places of Interest to see in Liguria
