The Four Provinces of Friuli-Venezia Giulia are: Gorizia : Pordenone : Trieste : Udine
The region is located in the north-east corner of Italy, bordered by Austria and Slovenia and close to Croatia. The capital of the region is the city of Trieste. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of the regions of Italy to have autonomous status.
The region includes two mountainous areas; to the North are the Julian Alps, and to the west the Dolomites. There are a good number of nature reserves; from the mountains to lagoon habitats and a marine reserve near Trieste. The coast varies from the beaches and lagoons at Lignano and Grado in the west to rocky coves in the Trieste area.
The lower hills of Friuli have fertile wine-producing areas producing Ramandolo and Picolit red wines but is now more famous for its white wine production with household names including Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio

Local Cuisine
The food culture and rituals of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region reflects the multi cultural influences and traditions of its neighbouring countries, Mediterranean and Slav are detectable in the range of flavours to be found here. The area is famous for its San Daniele ham and Sauris cured ham and its salami. Seafood dishes to be found here include crostacei e conchiglie (a crustacean and shellfish dish), specialities such as boreto from Grado, "scampi a la busara" from Istria, sardoni and ribaltavapori from the gulf of Trieste. There are also cheeses such as Montasio a smoked ricotta cheese and the less well known formadi frant and Asìno cheeses.
