Valencian Community consists of 3 Provinces: Alicante, Castellon and Valencia
The inland part of the territory is mountainous, with the highest peaks in the Valencia and Castellón provinces which form part of the Iberian Range. There is a coastline of some 518 km, mainly comprising of white, sandy beaches forming the Costa del Azahar in the north with the resorts of Vinaroz, Peniscola, Oropesa and Benicassim. Other places of interest are Peñiscola with its medieval castle or Oropesa, which conserves the 16th century Tower of the King, erected as a defence against pirates. The Costa Blanca in the south with the resorts of Denia to Pilar de la Horadada passing through Xabia, Calpe, Altea, Alicante, Orihuela, Santa Pola and Torrevieja.
The climate here has helped to make Valencia the “garden of Spain.” The Moors instigated an intensive system of cultivation allowing the production of citrus and other fruits, rice, vegetables, cereals, olive oil, and wine many of which are exported. The region’s biggest river is the Segura, to the south of Elche. The other geographically interesting features are the wetlands and marshlands such as those near Santa Pola, Torrevieja and L’Albufera, which attract many migratory birds. There have also been many prehistoric remains have been found in Valencia.
Valencia: The capital, this area is full of gothic, baroque and modernist monuments and excellent museums and art galleries.
Alicante: The second largest city of Valencian Community, dominated by the Moorish castle Castillo de Santa Barabara.
Food and Cuisine of the Region:
Home of the famous Paella, and is its birthplace. The typical Valencian paella contains meat and vegetables, but many other variants of rice-based dishes can be found, with shellfish, meatballs or just covered in egg ("Arròs amb crosta"). Fideus a la cassola is another local recipe - a sort of noodle dish. The abundance of almonds is used to make sweets: turrón, almendras garrapiñadas - a crunchy, almond sweet and guirlache -made of toasted almonds. Local cheese is Puzol.
