Regional capital: Limoges
The Limousin is located in the central area of France and is often called France profonde (meaning the "heartland of France"). It is a largely undiscovered and beautiful region with a unique landscape of woodlands, pasture, deep valleys and lakes and is also known as the French Lake District. There are many picturesque villages and towns to explore, including some of the most beautiful in France. The main industry is agriculture mainly bovine and potatoes. The cattle industry is very important (charolais and limousine), also wood, (especially oak which is used in the production of most of the wine casks used in France) leather and other derived products.
Wine in this area is rare and expensive but people in Limousin are proud of the food they produce here, especially the beef, pork and lamb. Many regional specialities use the wide variety of mushrooms common here, as well as chestnuts, walnuts and fruit. The liqueurs made from pears, prunes, chestnuts and walnuts are strong and delicious. Speciality puddings include cherry clafoutis and Treipaïs made with chocolate and chestnuts.
