08 Ardennes – main city Charleville-Mézières
Regional capital: Reims
Champagne-Ardennes borders Ile-de-France in the south-west, the industrial areas of Lorraine in the east, and Belgium in the north. This area is characterised by its plains, mostly to the south of the region, where vast quantities of cereals and maize are grown, to its rolling prairies located in the south between Reims/Epernay and Troyes. North of Reims the landscape becomes a flat chalky plain and is an extension of the chalk subsoil that comes to the surface at Calais and forms the White Cliffs of Dover in the South of England Closer to the border with Belgium, the landscape becomes more rugged and deeply forested. The region is better known for the white grape that has produced Champagne's sparkly wine since the days of Dom Perignon. Only bubbly made from vines from limited parts of the region can be called Champagne and these are mainly located in the Marne and Aube departments.
As well as the production of Champagne the region also produces some still wines such as Bouzy, Coteaux champenois, and Riceys. The regions best-known specialties are tête de veau or pigs feet à la St. Ménehould, andouillette de Troyes, and champagne chicken. For the sweet tooth The Ardennes sugar tart, gâteau mollet, or chocolate ardoises from Sedan are the preferred desserts of locals. Cheeses to enjoy here are Chaource, Langres, Troyen, and Coulommier.
