Regional capital:
Crossed by the Loire, it is the longest river in France (635 miles) flowing north from its source in central France, then west to the Atlantic. The river is considered to be the dividing line between the cold north and warmer south. The 150-mile stretch from Angers to Orléans was for centuries the favourite abode of the pleasure-loving nobility and is known as “chateau country”. Other things to see along the river are the many Troglodyte houses carved from the soft limestone.
The wines of this region are Chinon, Cremant de Loire, Touraine, Vouvray, Muscadet, Anjou Sancerre and Muscadet. The Loire Valley offers a range of dishes made from fish sourced from the Loire and its tributaries; wild boar from the region’s forests and poultry from the Orleans area. Mushrooms grown in the limestone caves around Saumur are found in dishes throughout the country. Local cheeses to try are Sainte Maure du Touraine, characterized by its log shape and its moldy ash coating. Pouligny St. Pierre, cone shaped goat cheese and Crottin de Chavignol which is perhaps the region's most popular goat cheese.
