The region Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur is often referred to more simply as PACA. It lies in the extreme south-east part of the country, stretching from the Southern Alps to the French Riviera, with the border of Italy and Monaco to the east. From the Alpine mountains down to the sandy beaches of Saint Tropez, Cannes and Nice, the region is an important destination for tourists offering a favourable climate all year round. The region also has a rich culture, traditions and festivals. The Cannes Film festival, Nice Carnival and the Jazz festival are just a few of the highlights whilst Avignon and Aix-en-Provence are cities of culture and academic excellence. Agriculturally, Provence produces 75% of France’s rice, almost two-thirds of the country’s olives, and half of its eating grapes. Apples, peaches, nectarines, cherries and pears are also big crops and cut flowers (43% of France’s roses and 63% of its carnations) are grown here.

The regions most famous food specialties are aïoli garni, bouillabaisse, codfish brandade, daube à la provençale, pumpkin gratin, panisse (fried chickpea cakes), pissaladière, ratatouille niçoise, rouille, salade niçoise, soupe au pistou (soup with basil and garlic), tapenade, sauté of veal aux olives, tians de légumes (vegetable gratin), and calissons d’Aix en Provence (almond candies). Regional cheese include Banon, faisselle, and Poivre d’Âne.
By Plane – The Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region has two international airports. The first is Marseille-Provence Airport. Air France offers flights throughout the day to Marseille-Provence from both Charles de Gaulle and Orly Airports in Paris (flight time is about 1 hour and 15 minutes). Many airlines offer flights to Marseille-Provence Airport from New York, Chicago, and other major U.S. cities with connections in other European cities such as Paris or Frankfurt.
The region’s second international airport is Nice Côte d’Azur. This airport offers flights to and from other French regions, many European destinations outside of France, and international destinations such as Toronto and Tel Aviv.
The Toulon-Hyères Airport and the Avignon-Caumont Airport link the region to other French destinations. A direct flight from Paris’ Orly Airport to Avignon is about 1.5 hours.

By Boat – The ports at Marseille, Toulon, and Nice have regular connections with other Mediterranean ports.
By Car – Paris to Marseille is 777 km (about 7 hours). Paris to Nice is 940 km, or about 8.5 hours.
