This region in northern France borders the Ile-de-France to the south, and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais in the north. The region has kept all its original beauty and has one of the most unspoilt stretches of coastline in the whole of France. The dunes and marshes along the Somme harbour a bird sanctuary and the area is also host to a huge range of fauna and flora. The area is synominous with enthusiasts who enjoy fishing and water sports. Picardy is well known for its numerous churches and abbeys and the massive gothic cathedrals of Amiens, Beauvais, Laon, Senlis, Noyon and Soissons. Picardy is well known for its dairy and beef cattle and is the second largest wheat producer in the country and has a formidable agrofoods industry and agricultural machinery sector is well established.

The regions speciality cuisine includes; Pot au feu: beef and vegetable stew, Duck paté, Ficelle picarde (ham pancake rolled up and filled with mushrooms) Soupe des Hortillons: soup made of carrots, Flamiche: Leek pie, Andouillette d’Amiens (meatball of minced pork with white of bread, egg, onions and garlic), Agneau de pré sale: Lamb raised in Baie de Somme. Sweet food: Gâteau battu, Macaroons , Crème Chantilly, Milk marmalade and Honey.

By Car – Most cities in Picardy are less than 2 hours from Paris by car. Driving times from Reims and Rouen to Picardy vary by destination: While Reims to Laon will take only about 40 minutes, the journey to Beauvais or Abbeville will take a little over two hours. Rouen to Abbeville or Amiens will take a little over an hour, while getting to Vervins or Laon from Rouen will take about 2.5 hours.

Picardy is also easily accessible by car from several other European destinations, located just a few hours drive from Cologne, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

By Train – The high-speed TGV train links the Haute-Picardy station to many French cities including Lille (25 minutes), Lyon (2 hours 45 minutes), Marseille (4 hours), and Bordeaux (4.5 hours). In addition, the TGV will get you to Picardy from London in 3 hours and from Brussels in 1.5 hours. The Thalys train will get you to Picardy from Frankfurt, Brussels, or Amsterdam.

By Plane – The closest airports are Paris’ Charles de Gaulle to the south and Beauvais-Tillé (located about an hour from Paris, Beauvais is a hub for low-cost airlines).
